Are you wanting to build your own website, but don’t know how? Read this helpful guide on how to build a website for beginners and you will.
Building a website doesn’t have to be hard. In fact, you don’t even have to know coding to do it. Instead, you just have to install a content management system.
But, I’ll get to that in a moment. First, you need to start at the beginning and go step by step. And, no matter the purpose for creating your website (promoting your business or making money with a blog), the steps remain the same.
So, what are the steps to building your own website? Let’s look at the one by one.
Picking Your Niche
A niche is nothing more than a segment of the market. Or, in internet terms, it’s a group of people searching for something. For example, my niche is online writers.
Why did I choose this niche? I wanted to help others make money by writing online. I have always wanted to be a writer, and helping others is a passion of mine.
So, I combined the two in my niche.
Once you’ve figured that out, you need to know your audience.
What are their passions, problems, or pain points. Even better, figure out what they buy online. This will place you in an excellent position to help your niche.
So, when picking your niche ask yourself, “What does my audience need?” Then, take your answer and combine it with your why and you have a powerful insight into your niche.
Your passion + Your audience’s need = your niche
Choose A Domain Name
The domain name is the name of your website. It’s also your domain’s URL (web address).
For example, the domain name for this site is Online Writing Adventure, and the URL is onlinewritingadventure.com.
Here’s some tips when choosing a domain name:
- It needs to fit your niche
- Research keywords or phrases associated with your niche
- Make it memorable
- Go for a .com name- it’s a trust factor
- Create a couple of options
- Find out if they are available
- Don’t get hung up on the domain name
When talking with other people that have created their own website, I’ve noticed a habit that can be problematic. Some people when choosing a domain spend way too much time on this process. And, this hinders you from getting your content on the internet.
Remember, the purpose of your domain is to attract an audience. But, it’s also about branding. So, choose a domain name that attracts attention and is important to your niche.
For example, I own a website called lupusisgoingdown.com. When I was coming up with the domain name, I knew that beating lupus is important to lupus sufferers (because I have lupus). So, I wanted my website to focus on that.
Thus, I chose that domain name.
But first, I checked to see if it was available. Domain names are like retail property. People are snatching them up and sitting on them. So, you need to get creative.
To do that, you can use a domain name generator like Name Mesh. Just enter a keyword you’re interested in and it provides you with suggestions. In addition, it tells you if a domain name is available.
Select a Hosting Service
To get your website onto the internet, it has to have a place to be stored. That’s what a hosting service does for you. More than that, they provide you with technology and services to keep your website performing efficiently.
When you sign up with a hosting service, your website is stored on their server. Basically, you park your website there.
Now, there are so many hosting services to choose from. As a beginner, you’re going to want to choose one that is newbie friendly. Moreover, you’re going to want to choose one that is affordable.
Yes, there are free options that are available. But, you get what you pay for. Going with a paid service allows you to use your own domain. This builds credibility into your website.
Paid is always better than free. Yet, you don’t have to break the bank.
Install a Content Management System
Now, I know that you’re probably wondering what a content management system is. Basically, it an application that allows you to create and manage content. Even better, you don’t even have to know coding because a CMS handles that for you.
Really, there’s so much happening in the background of your website that you won’t even know about. That is, if you’re not into that kind of thing. Fortunately, for those of us that are only interested in the content and appearance of our website, a CMS is a great tool.
While there are several systems to choose from, WordPress is the most widely known and used. With using WordPress, building your website and publishing takes minutes. Literally, building your website with WordPress takes a few steps.
And, after it’s created you can improve your website with enhancements within WordPress using a plug-in. In a moment, I’ll tell you about one type of plug-in that is vital.
Pick Your Theme
First of all, a theme is presentation style. Or, putting it simply, the theme is how your website will look. This includes both the design and layout.
For example, color choices are controlled in the theme. Also, if you want to have a background image, you would place it in theme. Yes, themes can be modified.
And, you should customize the appearance of your website so that it stands out. You can customize your website within the theme’s appearance settings up to a point. Or, you can use a plug-in. Finally, you can add code if you know how to do it.
And just like hosting services, you can choose between free and paid themes. On WordPress, for example, you can find a huge collection of free themes. Again, paid themes are a better option because they allow for more customization.
Ultimately, a theme allows you to enhance your website’s user experience. And, user experience is what it’s all about.
